Brandwatch review
Brandwatch remains one of the strongest enterprise platforms for social listening and consumer research, with powerful query construction, historical data and mature AI-assisted research. Its press coverage is considerably less convincing and should not be treated as a complete record of earned media.

Product record
Company structure
Brandwatch has operated inside Cision since 2021
Cision completed its acquisition of Brandwatch in June 2021. The wider group has continued adding research products around the Brandwatch business rather than limiting it to its original social-listening proposition.
Product scope
Consumer Research remains the strongest part of the Brandwatch proposition
Brandwatch Consumer Research is designed for teams that need to construct substantial research programs rather than monitor a small number of simple brand keywords.
Query construction
Advanced Boolean queries, rules, tags and categories give experienced analysts considerable control over how large conversation sets are collected and segmented.
Research dashboards
Users can build configurable dashboards around brands, competitors, markets, audiences and issues, then distribute results through reports and alerts.
Regional research
Brandwatch documents dedicated APAC coverage including sources such as QQ, Baidu, Naver, Qzone, Daum, Sohu, FC2 and Tistory.
First-party data
Customer-held text data such as surveys, support tickets and call logs can be uploaded and examined alongside externally collected material.
Buyer fit
Brandwatch suits mature research teams better than basic monitoring operations
Its value becomes easier to justify when organizations have analysts capable of building sophisticated queries and extracting research from large datasets.
Enterprise social-intelligence and consumer-research teams
Global brands, agencies and research functions can build detailed competitor, category and audience programs that would be cumbersome in simpler monitoring products.
Organizations needing substantial historical research also benefit from the depth of the archive and flexible segmentation.
PR teams buying primarily for press monitoring
Brandwatch is a difficult purchase to justify when reliable earned-media capture is the central requirement.
Smaller teams should also consider whether they have enough recurring research work to justify the product complexity and sales-led enterprise contract.
Media coverage
Press coverage is much weaker than Brandwatch's overall data proposition suggests
Brandwatch markets a very large research dataset and includes news among the sources available in Consumer Research and Listen. Reputation Insider's assessment of its earned-media coverage is poor: relevant articles can be absent often enough that Brandwatch should not be used as the sole record of press coverage.
Paywalled articles are excluded from Listen
Brandwatch's own source documentation states that articles behind a paywall are not indexed in Listen.
Missing content also appears in independent reviews
Current G2 feedback includes users reporting that mentions or content can be missed even where accounts are connected, while other reviewers describe restrictions affecting particular social sources.
Before buying Brandwatch for communications measurement, Reputation Insider would test recent known coverage from the publications the organization actually reports on. Print, paywalled material and broadcast options also require careful scoping because some forms of media data are handled through additional products or data providers.
AI and search intelligence
Iris AI is embedded into serious research workflows
Brandwatch's Iris AI is used across search, query creation and interpretation rather than appearing as a separate generative-summary feature.
Users can interrogate research data conversationally
Ask Iris searches Brandwatch data from a natural-language question and produces charts, summaries and supporting material for further investigation.
AI can assist with complex Boolean setup
Iris Query Writer generates and refines search logic using keyword, hashtag and subreddit suggestions, reducing some of the manual work involved in building monitoring queries.
Large conversation sets can be grouped automatically
Iris Topic Analysis identifies entities and recurring subjects within collected material and can summarize developments that would otherwise require manual review.
Trajaan extends Brandwatch into AI-answer visibility
Search Intelligence monitors brand treatment across generative-AI products alongside traditional, shopping and social search environments in more than 150 countries.
Pricing
Brandwatch does not publish subscription prices
The current plans page describes Standard through Enterprise options across its solutions, while actual commercial terms require contact with sales.
Brandwatch does not provide enough public information to calculate the cost of Consumer Intelligence, Search Intelligence or a broader multi-product deployment without a vendor quote.
What the company claims
These figures come from current Brandwatch product materials. Reputation Insider has not independently audited them.
Pros
- Advanced query construction gives experienced analysts unusually granular control over research programs.
- Historical research is substantially deeper than in many smaller social-listening platforms.
- Rules, categories and configurable dashboards support complex competitor and category studies.
- APAC-specific sources increase the usefulness of the platform for international consumer research.
- Iris AI is integrated into practical research tasks including query writing and interrogation of collected data.
Cons
- The platform requires experienced users to extract enough value from its more sophisticated research functionality.
- Independent reviewers continue to report a meaningful learning curve around advanced queries and dashboards.
- Sentiment and emotion classification still require manual validation in ambiguous contexts.
- Some users report unpredictable delays when working with large datasets or historical material.
- Commercial opacity makes cost comparison difficult before speaking with sales.
Contract terms
The current Cision agreement favors committed enterprise purchasing
Brandwatch business customers now sit under Cision's Master Subscription Agreement, last updated September 25, 2025.
Security
Brandwatch publishes unusually detailed enterprise security documentation
The current Brandwatch Security Programme describes certification, infrastructure, testing and breach-response practices across the product portfolio.
Brandwatch says an external party audits its adherence at least annually and that the current certificate can be requested.
Internal vulnerability testing is described as occurring at least monthly, while recent penetration-test results can be requested under NDA.
This commitment appears in Brandwatch's published security documentation.
Raw ingestion, indexing and storage are described as operating in AWS in the US, with frontend applications in European GCP infrastructure and customer metadata stored in the UK.
After that period, Brandwatch says the relevant account data is automatically deleted or anonymized except where retention is legally required.
The published security documentation also says Brandwatch Consumer Research does not currently provide end-user MFA, making identity requirements worth reviewing during procurement.
Independent user evidence
Consumer Intelligence scores better than the wider Brandwatch product portfolio
Current reviews generally favor the depth of the research product, customization and support. Critical feedback frequently concerns learning curve, source restrictions, performance and manual work required to clean or validate certain outputs.
Positive feedback
Users regularly praise customizable queries, flexible dashboards, reporting and customer support. Research and agency users also value the ability to work with substantial datasets across markets and competitors.
Critical feedback
Reviews describe a steep initial learning curve, occasional data inaccuracies, restrictions affecting some social platforms and periods of slow performance. Several reviewers say manual refinement is still necessary to obtain reliable classifications and cleaner datasets.
Reputation Insider verdict
Brandwatch remains an excellent research platform with an unreliable press-monitoring proposition
The case for Brandwatch is strongest when sophisticated social research, historical investigation and consumer intelligence justify the cost and complexity of an enterprise platform. Experienced analysts can build research programs here that simpler monitoring products cannot easily reproduce.
Reputation Insider would not use its news database as the sole source for earned-media reporting. Communications teams should test their publication universe separately and consider a dedicated media-monitoring product where complete press capture is a core requirement.
